How Will Electronic Logging Devices Affect Your Business?

When is the deadline for switching to electronic logging devices?

In December of 2015, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced new rules requiring the use of electronic logging devices throughout the commercial truck industry. The new rules set a two-year deadline to implement the switch. So when is the deadline for switching to electronic logging devices?

Electronic Logging Device Switch Deadline

The new rules regarding the use of electronic logging devices will go into effect on December 18, 2017.

The goal of the rules is to eliminate the potential inaccuracies that come with paper on-duty/off-duty logs. Electronic logging devices provide a more accurate record of the amount of time drivers spend on and off duty. Current laws limit drivers to 11 hours of driving each day.

The FMCSA is hoping that using electronic logging devices will help prevent over 1,800 crashes per year and save a significant number of lives. Eliminating the physical paperwork will also help save fleet owners and law enforcement agencies an estimated $1.6 billion.

The implementation of electronic logging devices has been met with resistance. Some independent drivers and owner-operators view the new rules as a violation of driver privacy. A court challenge to the law was struck down by the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago in late 2016, meaning the December 2017 deadline is still in effect.
