How does commercial truck platooning work?

Commercial truck platooning is a semi-autonomous way of having a group of multiple trucks travel in a convoy. This interesting strategy can have several benefits that have made the technology worth exploring. So how does commercial truck platooning work?

Truck Platooning Autonomous Technology

While truck platooning is not completely autonomous, many semi-autonomous technologies are used. The lead truck in the train controls the following vehicles behind it remotely through a computer system that employs multiple sensors. The communication link between the trucks allows them to share information and actions. If the lead truck engages its brakes, the trailing trucks will as well.

Platooning technology systems leave room for flexibility, should the need arise. The driver of the trailing vehicles can resume manual control of the truck at any time. The distance between the trucks can also be adjusted, if necessary.

Benefits of Truck Platooning

Commercial truck platooning offers several benefits. Platooning allows a group of trucks to travel closely together. The close following distance helps reduce aerodynamic drag and increase fuel efficiency, and thus reduce costs.

One of the challenges standing in the way of truck platooning is the simple issue of who to platoon with. Many fleet owners would prefer to platoon within their own fleets, while owner-operators would prefer to platoon with other owner-operators. Both groups have not expressed interest in overlapping platooning options.

Both owner-operators and fleet owners can find an impressive selection of truck models at one of our Allstate Peterbilt Group locations. You can also view our new and used truck inventory online.
